Language Information

Oscan was spoken in ancient southern and central Italy, in Samnium, Campania (including Pompeii), Lucania, and Bruttium. It is extinct.
Oscan was an Italic language related to Latin. It is known from several hundred inscriptions, including graffiti at Pompeii, written in its own alphabet derived from Etruscan and later in Greek and Latin letters. It was gradually replaced by Latin after the Roman conquest and died out in the 1st century A.D.
