Pahlavi (Middle Persian) was the language of Iran under the Sasanian Empire (A.D. 224-651). It is no longer spoken.
Middle Persian developed from Old Persian and is the ancestor of Modern Persian (Farsi). It was written in the Pahlavi script, derived from Aramaic, which used Aramaic words as symbols for Persian ones. Much of the Zoroastrian religious literature is written in Pahlavi, and it is still studied by Zoroastrian priests in Iran and India.
