Ijo (Ijaw) is spoken in southern Nigeria, throughout the Niger Delta, in Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, and Ondo states.
Ijo is a group of closely related languages forming the Ijoid branch of Niger-Congo, with about 2 million speakers. The Ijo are fishermen and traders of the delta creeks, and they were among the first Africans to trade with Europeans on the coast.
