Extinct languageLanguage Information
Illyrian was spoken in antiquity in the western Balkans, in what are now Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and coastal Croatia. It is extinct.
Illyrian was an Indo-European language known almost entirely from personal and place names recorded by Greek and Roman writers. Some scholars consider it the ancestor of Albanian, but this is debated. It died out after the Roman conquest of the region.
