Gothic

Extinct language

Language Information

Gothic was spoken by the Goths, a Germanic people who spread from the Baltic region to the lower Danube, the Black Sea, Italy, and Spain. It is extinct.
Gothic is the only East Germanic language with substantial texts. It is known mainly from the Bible translation made in the 4th century A.D. by Bishop Wulfila, who created the Gothic alphabet from Greek, Latin, and runic letters. A form called Crimean Gothic survived in the Crimea until the 18th century.
