Language Information
Occitan is spoken in southern France, in the Val d'Aran in Spain (where it is official), in the Occitan valleys of northwestern Italy, and in Monaco.
Occitan is a Romance language with several dialects, including Provençal, Languedocien, Gascon, and Limousin. It was the language of the medieval troubadours, whose poetry influenced all of European literature. Today it has perhaps a few hundred thousand speakers, mostly older people, but it is taught in bilingual schools.
