Toucouleur

Toucouleur (Tukulor) refers to the Fula-speaking people of the middle Senegal River valley in northern Senegal and southern Mauritania, and to their dialect of Fulani, called Pulaar.
Pulaar is a form of Fulani, a West Atlantic language of the Niger-Congo family. The Toucouleur were among the first peoples of West Africa to adopt Islam, and in the 19th century the Toucouleur leader El Hadj Umar Tall founded an empire stretching into present-day Mali.
