Abazinian

Language Information

Abazinian (commonly known as Abaza) is spoken primarily in the Russian Federation and Turkey, with smaller diaspora communities found in Jordan, Syria, Egypt, and Germany. In Russia, it holds official co-language status in the autonomous republic of Karachay-Cherkessia in the North Caucasus.
The Speakers: The language is spoken by the Abazins (or Abaza), an ancient indigenous ethnic group native to the Greater Caucasus region. There are roughly 43,000 speakers in Russia. While an estimated 150,000 ethnic Abazins live in Turkey, only about 10,000 to 20,000 still actively speak the language.
