Chinantec is spoken in southern Mexico, in northern Oaxaca and neighboring Veracruz.
Chinantec is a group of about a dozen Oto-Manguean languages with about 140,000 speakers. It is one of the most complex tonal languages in the world, and some communities use a whistled form of the language to communicate across distances.
