Chol is spoken in southern Mexico, in northern Chiapas and in Tabasco.
Chol is a Mayan language of the Cholan group, with about 200,000 speakers. The Cholan languages are the closest modern relatives of the language written in the Classic Maya hieroglyphic inscriptions, such as those at nearby Palenque.
