Chontal (Chontal Maya) is spoken in southern Mexico, in the state of Tabasco.
Chontal Maya is a Mayan language of the Cholan group, with about 40,000 speakers. It should not be confused with the Chontal of Oaxaca, an unrelated language with a similar name, which comes from a Nahuatl word meaning "foreigner."
