Fur

Language Information

Fur is spoken in western Sudan, in the Darfur region, around the Jebel Marra mountains, and by small communities in Chad.
Fur is a Nilo-Saharan language with about 500,000 to 1 million speakers. The name Darfur means "home of the Fur." The Fur Sultanate ruled the region from the 17th century until 1916.

kwa-sí nyéttiŋ baajtólá kereli nás nisila na ta̱gɨdɨŋ arrá ka̱ɨŋ, Naŋ-sí ugola na kilmaŋá arrá ka̱ɨŋ namá in lóŋ áláŋ sǔrŋâ-sí kí jaiŋa in kéél ná sǔrŋâ suurꞌíŋ bârŋa.

English translation

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
