Haida

Language Information

Haida is spoken in Canada, on Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands) in British Columbia, and in the United States in southern Alaska, on Prince of Wales Island (Hydaburg and Kasaan).
Haida is a language isolate, not related to Athapaskan as once thought. It is critically endangered, with only a handful of elderly first-language speakers, but it is taught in schools and adult programs. The Haida are renowned for their totem poles, canoes, and art.
