Language Information
Karachai (Karachay-Balkar) is spoken in Russia, in the North Caucasus republics of Karachay-Cherkessia and Kabardino-Balkaria, and by communities in Turkey and Central Asia.
Karachay and Balkar are two dialects of one Kipchak Turkic language, with about 300,000 speakers. Both peoples were deported to Central Asia by Stalin in 1943-1944 and were allowed to return in 1957. The language is written in the Cyrillic alphabet.
