Kara-Kalpak

Language Information

Kara-Kalpak is spoken in Uzbekistan, in the autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan south of the Aral Sea, and in neighboring Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
Kara-Kalpak is a Kipchak Turkic language, very close to Kazakh, with about 600,000 or more speakers. Its name means "black hat." The region has suffered greatly from the drying of the Aral Sea.
