Kawa (Wa) is spoken in northeastern Myanmar (the Wa State) and in southwestern China (Yunnan).
Wa is a Mon-Khmer language of the Palaungic branch, with about 1 million speakers. The Wa hills are remote and mountainous, and until the mid-20th century the Wa were known to outsiders as fierce headhunters.
