Khanty (Ostyak) is spoken in Russia, in western Siberia, along the Ob River and its tributaries, in the Khanty-Mansi and Yamalo-Nenets autonomous regions.
Khanty is an Ugric language of the Uralic family, closely related to Mansi and more distantly to Hungarian. It has about 10,000 speakers. The region's oil wealth has brought great changes to the traditional life of the Khanty, who are fishermen, hunters, and reindeer herders.
