Lepcha is spoken in India, in Sikkim and the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, and in Bhutan and Nepal.
Lepcha is a Tibeto-Burman language with about 30,000 to 50,000 speakers. The Lepcha consider themselves the original inhabitants of Sikkim. The language has its own script, created around the 18th century.
