Meithei (Meitei, or Manipuri) is spoken in northeastern India, in the state of Manipur, and in Assam, Tripura, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.
Meithei is a Tibeto-Burman language with about 1.8 million speakers and is one of the official languages of India. It has its own script, Meitei Mayek, which was revived in the 20th century after centuries of use of the Bengali script.
