Niuean is spoken on Niue, a self-governing island in free association with New Zealand, and by the much larger Niuean community in New Zealand.
Niuean is a Polynesian language closely related to Tongan. Only about 1,500 people live on Niue, and most Niueans live in New Zealand, where the language is losing ground to English; it is considered endangered.
