Nivkh (Gilyak) is spoken in Russia, on northern Sakhalin Island and along the lower Amur River.
Nivkh is a language isolate with no known relatives. It is critically endangered, with only about 100 to 200 speakers, mostly elderly. The Nivkh are traditionally fishermen and hunters of sea mammals.
