Nubian
Language Information
Nubian is spoken in southern Egypt and northern Sudan, along the Nile River between Aswan and Dongola, and in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan.
The Nubian languages, including Nobiin and Kenzi-Dongolawi, belong to the Eastern Sudanic branch of the Nilo-Saharan languages and have about 600,000 speakers. Old Nubian, written in an alphabet based on Coptic, was used in medieval Christian Nubia. Many Nubians were resettled when the Aswan High Dam flooded their homeland in the 1960s.
