Azeri-Arabic
Language Information
Azeri-Arabic refers to Azerbaijani (Azeri) written in the Arabic script. This is the form used in Iran, where most Azerbaijani speakers live, mainly in the northwestern provinces of East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan, Ardabil, and Zanjan, and in Tehran. It is also used by Azerbaijani communities in Iraq.
Azerbaijani is a Turkic language closely related to Turkish and Turkmen. The Republic of Azerbaijan also used the Arabic script until 1929, when the Soviet government replaced it with the Roman alphabet and later with Cyrillic; since 1991 the Republic has used a Roman alphabet again. In Iran, where estimates of speakers range from about 15 to 25 million, Azerbaijani is written in a modified Persian-Arabic alphabet and contains many Persian loanwords.
