Saramacca

Language Information

Saramacca (Saramaccan) is spoken in Suriname, along the upper Suriname River, and in French Guiana.
Saramaccan is a creole with vocabulary from English and Portuguese, as well as from African languages such as Fon and Kikongo. It is spoken by about 90,000 descendants of Maroons, enslaved Africans who escaped from plantations in the 17th and 18th centuries.
