Tarasco (Purépecha) is spoken in western Mexico, in the highlands of Michoacán, around Lake Pátzcuaro.
Tarasco is a language isolate with about 140,000 speakers. The Tarascan state was a powerful empire that successfully resisted the Aztecs.
