Language Information
Hmong is spoken in southern China (Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, and Guangxi), northern Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. Large refugee communities live in the United States (especially Minnesota, California, and Wisconsin), France, Australia, and French Guiana.
Hmong is a tonal language with seven or eight tones. It was long unwritten until missionaries in Laos developed the Romanized Popular Alphabet in 1953, which is now the most widely used writing system. Many Hmong emigrated after the Vietnam War, during which they had allied with the United States in Laos.
