Language Information

Xhosa is spoken principally in the Transkei territory of South Africa, which borders Lesotho and faces the Indian Ocean. It is another of the Bantu languages with about 8 million speakers. The Xhosas have intermingled with the Hottentots and their language contains some of the Hottentot "click" sounds. The Xh at the beginning of their name represents one of these sounds.

Bonke abantu bazalwa bekhululekile belingana ngesidima nangokweemfanelo. Bonke abantu banesiphiwo sesazela nesizathu sokwenza isenzo ongathanda ukuba senziwe kumzalwane wakho.

English translation

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
