Language Information

Temne is spoken in Sierra Leone, mainly in the northern and central parts of the country, including the area around Freetown, and by small communities in Guinea.
Temne is a Niger-Congo language of the Atlantic branch, related to the Baga and Bullom languages. It is spoken by about 2 million people as a first language, roughly a third of Sierra Leone's population, and it is widely used as a second language in the north. It is a tonal language with a system of noun classes marked by prefixes.
