Language Information
Kanuri is spoken in northeastern Nigeria (especially Borno State), southeastern Niger, western Chad, and northern Cameroon, in the region around Lake Chad.
Kanuri belongs to the Saharan branch of the Nilo-Saharan languages. It has about 10 million speakers and was the language of the Kanem-Bornu Empire, which ruled the Lake Chad region from the 9th to the 19th century. It has long been written in the Arabic script (called Ajami), and today it is also written in the Roman alphabet.
