Language Information
Swiss German (Schweizerdeutsch) is spoken in the German-speaking regions of Switzerland, covering most of the north, center, and east of the country, and in Liechtenstein. Closely related Alemannic dialects are spoken in southwestern Germany, the Alsace region of France, and western Austria (Vorarlberg).
Swiss German is not a single standard language but a group of Alemannic dialects that vary from valley to valley and are often hard for other German speakers to understand. About 5 million people speak it. It is used in everyday conversation at every level of society, while Standard German is used for most writing, schooling, and formal occasions. Switzerland has four national languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh.
