Tigre is spoken in Eritrea, mainly in the northern and western lowlands and along the Red Sea coast, and in small numbers in eastern Sudan.
Tigre is an Ethiopic Semitic language descended from, or closely related to, Ge'ez, and it is related to Tigrinya and Amharic. It has about 1 million speakers, and it is written in the Ge'ez script. Most of its speakers are Muslim, and many are pastoralists.
