Language Information
Krio is spoken in Sierra Leone, where it is the native language of the Krio people in and around Freetown and the lingua franca of the whole country, understood by about 90 percent of the population.
Krio is an English-based creole, with words from Yoruba, Portuguese, and other West African languages. It developed among freed slaves and their descendants who settled in Freetown from the late 18th century, including people from Jamaica, Nova Scotia, and Britain. It is closely related to the Pidgin English of Nigeria, Ghana, and Cameroon.
