Hakka

Language Information

Hakka is spoken in southern China (eastern Guangdong, western Fujian, and southern Jiangxi), in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and by overseas Chinese communities in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Jamaica, and elsewhere.
Hakka is a Chinese language with about 45 million speakers. The name means "guest people," because the Hakka migrated southward from northern China in several waves. Famous Hakka include the Taiping leader Hong Xiuquan and Singapore's founding prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew.
