Nama (Khoekhoegowab) is spoken in Namibia, mainly in the south and in the capital Windhoek, and in small numbers in South Africa and Botswana.
Nama belongs to the Khoe branch of the Khoisan languages and is the largest of them, with about 250,000 speakers, including the Damara people. It is famous for its click consonants, which are written with symbols such as !, |, and #. It is taught in Namibian schools. It was formerly called "Hottentot," a name now considered offensive.
