Language Information
Nepali is the national language of Nepal. It is the mother tongue of about 12 million people there and is spoken fluently as a second language by about 2 million others. Nepali is also spoken in the Indian states of West Bengal (especially in the city of Darjeeling) and Assam, as well as in the Indian protectorates of Bhutan and Sikkim. All told, there are close to 15 million speakers of the language.
Nepali is one of the Indic languages and is thus related to Hindi and, more distantly, to the other Indo-European languages. The alphabet is the same as that used for Sanskrit and Hindi.
