Bora-Bora is a volcanic island, part of French Polynesia in the southern Pacific Ocean. It is one of the Leeward Islands, in the Society Islands group. Surrounded by coral reefs, Bora-Bora covers an area of approximately 39 sq km (15 sq mi) and has a population of 4225 (1988 census). Vaitape, on the western coast, is Bora-Bora''s chief settlement. Tourism and copra production are the leading industries of the island.
