Language Information
Tigrinya is spoken in Eritrea, where it is one of the main working languages, and in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia. Large communities also live in Sudan, Europe, and North America.
Tigrinya is an Ethiopic Semitic language closely related to Tigre and Amharic and descended from Ge'ez. It has about 9 to 10 million speakers and is written in the Ge'ez script. The oldest known text in Tigrinya dates from the 13th century.
