Language Information
Romanian is the official language of Romania and Moldova. It is also spoken in Ukraine, Serbia (Vojvodina), Hungary, and Bulgaria, and by large emigrant communities in Italy, Spain, Germany, Israel, Canada, and the United States. It is one of the official languages of the European Union.
Romanian has about 24 million native speakers. It is the only major Romance language of Eastern Europe, descended from the Latin spoken in the Roman province of Dacia, which Rome conquered in A.D. 106. Surrounded by Slavic languages for centuries, it absorbed many Slavic words, as well as words from Hungarian, Turkish, and Greek. It was written in the Cyrillic alphabet until the 1860s, when Romania adopted the Roman alphabet; Moldova switched from Cyrillic to Roman in 1989.
