Language Information
Songhai is spoken along the Niger River in Mali (around Timbuktu and Gao), western Niger, northern Benin, and Burkina Faso.
The Songhay languages, with about 4 million speakers, are usually classed as Nilo-Saharan. Songhai was the language of the Songhai Empire, which ruled much of West Africa in the 15th and 16th centuries from its capital at Gao.
