Language Information

Irish (also called Irish Gaelic, and in Irish Gaeilge) is spoken in Ireland, where it is the first official language, and in Northern Ireland (United Kingdom), where it gained official recognition in 2022. It is also an official language of the European Union. Smaller communities of speakers live in the United States, Canada, Britain, and Australia.
Irish is a Celtic language of the Goidelic branch, closely related to Scottish Gaelic and Manx. It has one of the oldest vernacular literatures in Europe, going back to the 6th century. After centuries of decline under English rule and the Great Famine of the 1840s, it survives as a daily community language mainly in the Gaeltacht regions along the west coast, in counties such as Donegal, Galway, and Kerry. About 1.9 million people in Ireland report some ability in Irish, but only about 70,000 speak it daily outside school.
