Language Information
A creole is a language that develops from a pidgin, or simplified contact language, when children learn it as their first language. Creoles are spoken around the world, especially in the Caribbean, West Africa, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific.
Most creoles take their vocabulary mainly from a European language, such as French, English, Portuguese, Spanish, or Dutch, combined with grammar and words from African or other local languages. Examples include Haitian Creole, Jamaican Patois, Tok Pisin, Cape Verdean Creole, and Papiamento.
